It takes a lot of integrity to stand up for what is right during that time and that is exactly what Atticus is making an effort to do. Themes of racial and classist prejudice are developed by Lee to challenge the reader. These techniques are all powerful ways to alter the views of the reader. No one, by nature, is superior to anybody else. This is a very contrary view to what most people believed at that time, especially in the South.


There was prejudice between races and prejudice between families. The most obvious theme of the book is racism. Even though the amendments which freed slaves and gave them rights were passed more than sixty years prior, the culture of the south intertwined with racism. Interracial marriages were illegal. Different races could not attend the same schools. It was the law that whites and blacks could not even be put together in the same jail cells. Looking at these things, one can only imagine the upheaval when a Negro was accused of raping a white woman: but did this stop Atticus from standing up for justice? Atticus saw all people as equal, regardless of their skin color and he knew what was the right thing to do. He was a friend and ally to the African American community and they respected them for it.


Another example is the Cunningham family. When Walter comes over for lunch, Scout criticizes him but. She stood up for him, because she thought everyone deserves an equal chance. The act of prejudice is one that everyone experiences. Whether it be, a person who is distributing hate, or a person who is receiving hate, everyone has contact with it. Although it is present all over the globe, it is prominent in the United States. Both in the present and the past, endless acts of discrimination have taken place and left a monumental impact on the country. As the story progresses, Lee compares these concepts to one another and uses them to make a statement about the problematic nature in America. Prejudice should not exist in this world. But unfortunately, it does and it always will somehow. The book, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, is an inspiring book and brings out hard truths about how the world used to be, about the great depression, and in some aspects how it still is today.


It follows a girl named Scout and her family through three years of her childhood. Her father, Atticus Finch, took on a very big challenge to defend a negro for raping a girl. The book sort of revolves around this event. Prejudice is in many different forms of discrimination. Throughout the book it is demonstrated by race, class, and gender. Prejudice has been apart of human beings since the beginning of time. People hold disparaging views towards other groups because of sex, race, color and religious beliefs. In my essay I will discuss how Harper Lee explores the theme of prejudice by looking at the writing techniques and how they affect people. With more than 50 years since the brown vs. board of education case there is still incidents like Ferguson, Baton Rouge, and Phiando Castile where many questions are still unanswered. However, Harper Lee dealt with these same problems in when she wrote To Kill a Mockingbird. Lee created an emotionally confronting story. But when Atticus takes on a case defending a black man Tom Robinson convicted for rapping a white woman Mayella Ewell and is found guilty.


Therefore, Lee applies the literary concepts of diction and tone to revel the truth that prejudices in society negatively affect the way people treat each other in To Kill a Mocking Bird. Discrimination, it has been part of human nature for a long time, especially relevant subject in literature such as To Kill a Mockingbird. There will always be hatred and love throughout the world, but to get from one to the other we must get over our prejudices. That is the key to love and kindness.
